Young Dale broke his arm today playing hero in the dragon's grave. He's been told countless times to stay away from that monstrous skeleton, but he just can't resist scaling atop the serpent and imagining the battle unfolding again. The attack is still so fresh in everyone's minds that many can't bear to look north towards the mountains at all, yet the terror and sadness felt by most are simply foreign to Dale. He does not comprehend the losses inflicted by the dragon's attack. He is unaware of how vulnerable we are with so few fighting men left. He does not know how difficult it was to rebuild the northern tavern wall in the frigid cold. He does not know the anguish of pulling the frozen remains of a loved one out of the snow for a proper burial. He is simply dazzled by the heroic men who brought the beast down.
It has been almost a week now since the dragon slayer left. Tihm is still threatening to follow and "join the adventure", but at this point he couldn't hope to catch him. Like Dale, Tihm has been mystified by heroics, but it has affected him in a more urgent way than his younger brother.
He has been collecting metal fragments from the ground near the skeleton. Uncle Owen tells me they are the remains of chain mail - made brittle by the dragon's freezing breath then shattered by it's claws. Anyway, he has taken this metal to the blacksmith's furnace and has begun what he calls "reconstruction".
He has also been asking a lot of suggestive questions. He wanted to know at what age the kingdom would accept a youth as a soldier. He wanted to know how long a journey to Parlion would take. He wants to know where he could learn more about dragons and other beasts of destruction. I fear Tihm has already decided he will mimic the dragon slayer in every way possible in hopes have becoming one himself - a goal which cost my dear brother Derik his life.
