Thoughts of an Unknown Character

In the two days I look for weaknesses in the defenses. Structural / key points where I could "Accidentally" take out a guard.

18th Day of Resent in Year 3210 of the Emerald Age

Construction continues according to schedule with only a few exceptions. The sand golems have had little success repairing the third tower. I fear the cloud ancient's last attack has entirely compromised the structural integrity. The globe from that tower has been mounted on the southern tower and seems to function normally, despite having fallen some 500 feet.

I am still awaiting the final shipment of rubies. I have tested several of your theories involving simpler and less expensive methods, yet the globes dyed with such techniques have insufficient reach. The final implementation will require the use of crushed rubies on all globes if we are to accomplish your goal.

Lastly, I am unable to perform any tests on the central tower until the matrix is complete. I will require the artifact to initiate the process. I can assure you that all elements have been examined thoroughly by both myself and my Thanoti.

Until We Meet,
Nelduik Bloodeye

11th Day of Ardaise in Year 1218 of the Janissarian Age

Young Dale broke his arm today playing hero in the dragon's grave. He's been told countless times to stay away from that monstrous skeleton, but he just can't resist scaling atop the serpent and imagining the battle unfolding again. The attack is still so fresh in everyone's minds that many can't bear to look north towards the mountains at all, yet the terror and sadness felt by most are simply foreign to Dale. He does not comprehend the losses inflicted by the dragon's attack. He is unaware of how vulnerable we are with so few fighting men left. He does not know how difficult it was to rebuild the northern tavern wall in the frigid cold. He does not know the anguish of pulling the frozen remains of a loved one out of the snow for a proper burial. He is simply dazzled by the heroic men who brought the beast down.

It has been almost a week now since the dragon slayer left. Tihm is still threatening to follow and "join the adventure", but at this point he couldn't hope to catch him. Like Dale, Tihm has been mystified by heroics, but it has affected him in a more urgent way than his younger brother.

He has been collecting metal fragments from the ground near the skeleton. Uncle Owen tells me they are the remains of chain mail - made brittle by the dragon's freezing breath then shattered by it's claws. Anyway, he has taken this metal to the blacksmith's furnace and has begun what he calls "reconstruction".

He has also been asking a lot of suggestive questions. He wanted to know at what age the kingdom would accept a youth as a soldier. He wanted to know how long a journey to Parlion would take. He wants to know where he could learn more about dragons and other beasts of destruction. I fear Tihm has already decided he will mimic the dragon slayer in every way possible in hopes have becoming one himself - a goal which cost my dear brother Derik his life.

20th Day of Baitraise in Year 3133 of the Emerald Age

Another long day has finally come to a close. I haven't much to look forward to tomorrow; just more of the same strenuous work. Although the royal mages have transported fields worth of dirt with their arcane abilities, the mountains left for the shovels are immense. It will likely take years for the remains of the flying island to be removed.

The clergy is responsible for burials of both human and aarakocran corpses; being a newly appointed cleric I am frequently assigned to this gruesome task. I still cannot imagine how three heroes could slay so many of the black bird-men. Few bodies remain in the mounds, however a particularly unusual aarakocran corpse was discovered today. It seemed that the creature had been impaled by a large stone disc. The stone was perfectly formed, razor sharp around the edges and oddly cool to the touch. The royal historian was summoned and he took the stone into the city; it will likely end up in a secluded room somewhere inside the castle for the wizards and sages to study.

Yet here, in the secrecy of these private scrolls, I must confess they all missed something. Before the historian came to the mounds, I extracted a small scrap of cloth from under a claw on the beasts hand. The fabric is of obvious high quality - despite the filth it was buried under, neither a hint of blood nor speck of dirt soiled its thread. It is layered wool with an intricate seam on one end. The thread holds extraordinarily fast, for what little fraying exists on the torn sides cannot be easily pulled apart. The significance of this piece, however, lay in its colors - one side a royal purple, the other a rich emerald green.

I cannot express in words the sense of awe which consumes me when I gaze upon this small relic.

14th Day of Foren in Year 3209 of the Emerald Age

An accident occurred in the laboratory this afternoon. A novice transmuter believed the best object for practice to be an empty glass vial on one of our potion tables. Despite the meager strength of his incantation, it was enough for the glass neck to be Enlarged beyond the size of it's suspension prong. The resulting mess by itself would be tolerable; however a nearby Glassee oil experiment became tainted by the shards of glass. Upon dropping into the oil's mixing bowl a chain reaction began which neither myself nor any of my subordinates can explain. All glass items within a 5 foot radius were instantly shattered; each and every shard shaped identically. The oblong stones fell in a peculiar pattern in which all tips pointed towards the now bone dry oil bowl.

The lost materials will be expensive to replace; however, since a promising magical phenomenon has been stumbled upon, the novice responsible will only serve 3 days in solitary confinement.
